Profitcast FeedburnerWhat I’ve come to discover, and we may not like this, is that there’s really no quick way to growing and monetizing our podcasts despite what some people will say.

It takes a level of excellence in most, if not all areas, to grow and monetize our podcasts.

We can continue to talk about the strategies to monetize and the strategies to grow our audience (and we will) with iTunes, reviews, social media, etc., but the reality is, if we don’t cure our average with our podcasts… none of those strategies will matter in the long run.

I came to a realization that we really need to CURE THE AVERAGE for our podcasts.  It is essential that we MASTER OUR CRAFT of podcasting.

I’m not saying we need to be perfect by any means.  But I AM saying that we need to put priority, focus, commitment, perseverance, etc. on mastering excellence with our podcasts.  When we can do that, those strategies we’ve been talking about will be a LOT easier to implement and succeed with!

  • So are you in this for the long haul?  Because if you are… and you’re willing to cure the average in your podcast, then you’ll succeed.
  • Practice mic and presentation skills – mirror, shower, car, etc. A LOT
  • Ask a LOT of questions and listen to people – what they want, etc.
  • LOVE what you do – and choose a topic that you can enjoy
  • Continue to learn and apply the knowledge to wisdom

  • Brian, As far as I can tell, podcasting is an amplifier, a mega-phone if you will. That’s why there are speakers who podcast, writers who podcast, tech people who podcast, etc. Even when they sell courses and digital products, these are just an extension of their initial skill. The problem comes when people want to begin with the podcast, rather than begin with the foundational skill. Either way, the podcast amplifies a message, so rather than being the direct source of income, it extends the message that then makes income possible through other avenues. (The exception is a direct sponsor/advertiser, of course). The amazing value of podcasting however is that it has the power to amplify the message all around the world!

      Eric, these are great points! So what about a podcaster who absolutely loves podcasting and wants it to be the source of income because podcasting is their foundational skill? Justin Crossley of the Brewing Network had a passion for radio and wanted to do radio/get behind the mic for his career. Granted, he combined his passion for beer with it and has been tremendously successful. But curious your thoughts! :)

      • For this person I think there are three roads. One is making personality, and a unique means of expression and point of view, the center. A lot of people may think that David Siteman Garland is successful because of his courses, but I’m pretty sure it’s because of his personality and how he’s capitalized on it. This is a large part of Cliff Ravenscraft’s and Pat Flynn’s success as well. Likability play a big part. (By the way there’s a great book by Tim Sanders called The Likability Factor) A second path is podcasting expertise, which is a strong suit of yours. By the way, don’t think because of Cliff’s A-Z course or Jon’s Podcaster’s Paradise that this has even begun to be explored. Think of the early days of TV. Think of what that NPR guy is doing with his Start Up podcast, or the new Serial docudrama. By the way there is a book that NPR put out on interviewing a few years ago called Sound Reporting that unpacks their very successful story-telling style. As an important side note, I think you are likely too close to your own skills and abilities to know how much you have to offer in this area. Your show has energy, quality and focus. You know a 1001 things from your radio experience that people would like to learn. Its just a matter of simplifying, structuring and delivering it. I know you are beginning to do this, I just think you know more than even you realize. This is kind of like what Jeff Brown is doing, but I think your skills excel his. The third path is one Jon Lee Dumas discovered. Most people look at Jon’s success, but they miss the fact that his success is built on the success he offers others. By featuring an entrepreneur he increases their visibility and extends their reach in dramatic ways and thus improves their bottom line. The double whammy is he does this while also offering massive value to his listeners, which is the part most people focus on. A podcaster who can offer this kind of service to others, even in a small niche market (maybe especially in a small niche market) is bound to be successful. It was Zig Ziglar who said, “You can get everything you want in life if you just help enough other people get what they want.” Jon is doing this and because podcasting is such a massive megaphone, his success has been exponential. Hope this is helpful!
